SERRALUNGA D'ALBA

The Barolos of Serralunga are known for their powerful tannin, due to the Serralungese soils of gray marl and sandstone, consisting of almost cement-like silica sand. The presence of calcium carbonate and iron gives the soil a red-gray color. Here are the oldest soil layers, which were formed about 12 million years ago. Barolos from Serralunga are powerful, explosive wines rich in tannin that are considered real wines for storage.

Serralunga, which literally means long greenhouse, a name derived from its location; elongated and draped over a hilltop and also thanks to the micro-climate that prevails, consists of a number of concentric rings of buildings surrounding the majestic castle dating from the 14th century. It has a population of about 500 people and is located in the east of the Barolo region.

The village has 39 MGAs, of which Vigna Rionda is the most famous, which is where gems of wines come from and is shared by no fewer than 11 wineries. That the soils of Serralunga produce legendary wines is evident from the fact that the Monfortino of Conterno ( one of the most sought-after wines in the world) also has Serralungese roots in the Francia vineyard, a cru located in the far south-east of the appellation. .
