LAZZARITO MGA

Geological map of the Barolo MGA Lazzarito.

Lazzarito is an important MGA in Serralunga d’Alba, covering approximately 29.5 hectares at an altitude of about 260 to 380 metres. The vineyard is shaped like a natural amphitheatre and faces predominantly west and southwest. Its sheltered position and the afternoon sun create a favourable microclimate.

The highly calcareous Lequio soil gives the wines structure, tension and great ageing potential. Lazzarito is known for Barolos with power and distinct tannins, but the best wines combine this with refinement and elegance.

Within the MGA lies Lazzairasco, the lower, southwest-facing section. The lime- and marl-rich soil here contains local veins of iron-rich sandstone, which contributes to a fine structure and silky tannins.

The name Lazzarito appears in the land registry as early as 1610 and is said to refer to a lazaretto wood.

Lazzarito is a characterful Barolo from Serralunga: powerful and structured, yet refined, with tension, depth and great ageing potential.
