LUIGI PIRA
From the terrace of winemaker Gianpaolo Pira you have a beautiful view over two historic crus of Serralunga, from which Pira makes his Barolo Marenca and Margheria. A little further on, the slope of the legendary cru Vigna Rionda is visible, another (in this case world-famous) vineyard from which Pira produces a Barolo.
Founder, namesake and father Luigi Pira, who sadly passed away in 2021, grew grapes in and around Serralunga for decades. These were sold to the large wineries of Alba, until he started bottling under his own label in the 1980s and quality came first. In the early 1990s his son Gianpaolo continued this line, with drinkability and even higher quality as the spearhead.
Under its own label, Pira makes a classic, high-quality Piedmontese range of red wines. Gianpaolo, besides being a winemaker also a passionate (white) truffle hunter, a good friend and the figurehead of the estate, rules the cellar, while his brothers Romolo and Claudio can generally be found in the vineyards.
Pira's Barolos guarantee quality and character. They reflect the Serralunga roots of the Pira family.
Pira uses a fairly modern approach to winemaking, ageing the Barolo Vigna Rionda and Marenca in both small and large oak, while the other Barolos are aged in botti only. Pira looks very carefully at what the grape needs to produce the best possible Barolo, one that reflects its origin as precisely as possible.
As mentioned, these are wines full of character, depth and structure; every glass is a journey of discovery. Just like the people of Piedmont, Pira's Barolos need a little time to open up and show their best side, but once the wine has had some time in your glass, you will be doubly rewarded with a wine that stands like a house.
