Elegant and refined, with aromas of dried flowers, red fruit, herbs, and a hint of eucalyptus. Supple and harmonious on the palate, with fresh acidity, soft yet present tannins, and a long, spicy finish.

Food Pairing

Excellent with tajarin, truffle, mushrooms, brasato, game, and aged cheeses. Also pairs beautifully with classic Piedmontese stews. Serve at 18 °C.

About the Winery

Just south of Barolo lies the family estate of the Cagliero family. If you are looking for authenticity, you have come to the right place: time has stood still here, and they would like to keep it that way. Father, mother, and son Stefano run their cantina as they have for generations, full of passion and dedication. Stefano is the linchpin in the cellar, father assists him, and mother runs the agriturismo that is part of the estate.

The wines are wonderfully distinctive and of high quality. In addition to many other delicious wines, Cagliero produces a Barolo Ravera, a Barolo Terlo, and a Barolo Ravera Riserva. With the Riserva, we have a real prizewinner, and it is one of the finest Barolos we have ever had the pleasure of tasting.

The story goes that the secret recipe for their Barolo Chinato, a herbal liqueur with Barolo as its main ingredient, was rediscovered after years on an old attic beam. It had been written there by Stefano's great-grandmother. The Dolcetto also has its own story: it comes from the vineyard that once belonged to the nonna.

Cagliero produces just under 50,000 bottles per year and works with both barriques and tonneaux. The Barolos, however, are aged in large wooden barrels. Notably, green pruning is applied to the Barbera, and the Langhe Bianco is an excellent blend of Arneis, Favorita, and Sauvignon.

Vineyard

Originating from Terlo in Barolo, at an altitude of approximately 320 meters with a southeast exposure. The soil consists of clay with blue marl and sandy deposits. This gives the Nebbiolo finesse, minerality, and structure.

Vinification & Ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand and undergo at least 15 days of skin maceration. The Barolo is then aged for three years in Slavonian oak, followed by a minimum of six months of bottle aging.

Ageing Potential

The 2019 has developed beautifully, but thanks to its acidity and tannins, it still has plenty of potential. Already drinking well now and will keep for approximately 10–15 years after the harvest.
