UGO LEQUIO

Ugo Lequio is a different story. Despite not owning any vines, he started his own "garage" winery in 1981. He was born and raised as the youngest son in a winemaking family from Neive. His birthplace is located directly opposite the famous Barbaresco cru Gallina. This way he knew exactly which vineyards produced the most beautiful grapes and would therefore produce the best wines. Those plots were owned by the Marcarino Family. Since Ugo's brother, as the eldest child in the family, acquired the family vineyards, Ugo had no other option than to buy good quality grapes and thus be able to make wine himself. to make. He also started buying Barbera grapes from the aforementioned vineyard. Only after years of building a relationship was he able to convince the Marcarino family to also sell part of the Nebbiolo grapes, which previously went to legend winemaker Bruno Giacosa, to him.

Ugo does everything himself, including supervision of the vineyard management. His grape selection is meticulous and his winemaking very traditional. He matures his wines longer than the prescribed rules in large wooden bottes and in his "garage" at home. He is a perfectionist through and through and that produces beautiful, high-quality wines. Ugo favors macerating his wines until all the sugar has been converted into alcohol. A method that produces deep and complex wines.

He is a true artisan and makes incredible wines. For example, Kerin O'keefe wrote about his Ugo and his Arneis; "A fantastic expression of Arneis from one of the Langhe's top and shockingly still-under-the-radar producers"

Tasting Notes

Aromas of dried cherry, cranberry, rose petals, earth, and graphite, with subtle spiciness. Tight and layered on the palate, with firm yet refined tannins, lively acidity, and a long, mineral finish. A precise and characterful Barbaresco.

Food Pairing

Perfect with game and rich stews, but also with ragù, truffle, and aged cheeses. A Barbaresco for long, gastronomic dinners. Serve at 17 °C.

About the Winery

Ugo Lequio is a story unto himself. In 1981, he started his own small, almost ‘garage’-style winery without owning a single vine. Born and raised in Neive as the youngest son of a winemaking family, he knew the area and the best vineyards like no other. His winery is located right next to the famous Gallina hill, home to the historic Cascina Nuova, now owned by the Marcarino family.

Since the family vineyards did not belong to him, Ugo chose a different path: he set out to find the best grapes. He started with Barbera from the Marcarino family and built a relationship of trust with them over the years. Eventually, he managed to convince them to sell him a portion of their precious Nebbiolo as well. These grapes previously went to the legendary winemaker Bruno Giacosa.

Ugo does almost everything himself and personally supervises vineyard management. His grape selection is extremely meticulous and his winemaking is decidedly traditional. Furthermore, he deliberately gives his wines more time than the regulations require. Aging takes place in large wooden botti, followed by further rest in his cellar in Neive.

This combination of patience, precision, and craftsmanship yields wines with depth, structure, and a distinct character of their own. Ugo is a true artisan who prioritizes quality over production and only releases his wines when he feels they are ready.

Kerin O’Keefe of Wine Enthusiast described his Arneis as “a fantastic expression of Arneis” from one of the best, yet still remarkably little-known, producers in the Langhe.

Vineyard

Originating from Gallina in Neive, a historic MGA with a southern exposure and old Nebbiolo vines. The vineyard is known for elegant, structured, and long-lived Barbaresco wines.

Vinification & Ageing

Traditionally vinified in stainless steel tanks with 15–18 days of skin maceration. The wine is then aged for 20 months in large 25 hl Slavonian oak barrels, followed by 6 months of bottle aging.

Ageing Potential

The 2019 combines vibrant acidity and firm tannins with ripe red fruit and a mineral structure. Already attractive, further bottle aging will provide more harmony and complexity. Well worth keeping until approximately 2038-2040.
