The wine

The Pira Nebbiolo is another top wine that we immediately fell in love with. Wood aging in large used barrels softens the tannins of this Nebbiolo grape but does not deprive the wine of the structure that we can expect from a young Nebbiolo.
Complex and intense aromas of pressed red fruit, rose leaves, peach and something spicy. Minerals in the mouth with beautiful grainy tannins and a long lasting, washing taste.
Typical Nebbiolo in top form!

LUIGI PIRA

From the terrace of winemaker Gianpaolo Pira you have a beautiful view of 2 historic crus of Serralunga from which Pira makes his Barolo Marenca and Margheria. A little further on, the slope of the legendary cru Vignarionda is visible, another (in this case world famous) vineyard from which Pira produces a Barolo.
Founder, namesake and father Luigi Pira, who unfortunately passed away in 2021, had been growing grapes in and around Serralunga for decades. These were sold to the major wineries in and around Alba. In the early 1990s, son Gianpaolo changed strategy and quality became the spearhead. Since the 1990s, they have been making a classic and high-quality Piedmontese line of red wines under their own label. Gianpaolo, in addition to being a winemaker, an avid truffle hunter and figurehead of the company, rules the cellar, while his brothers Romolo and Claudio can generally be found on the land. Father Luigi Pira, also the namesake of the family business, unfortunately passed away in 2021.
Pira's Barolos guarantee quality and character. They are a reflection of the Serralunghese "roots" of the Piras.
Pira uses a fairly modern way of making wine and uses both small and large oak to mature its Barolos. At Pira they look very carefully at what the grape needs to generate the best possible Barolo wine. As mentioned earlier, these are wines full of character, depth and structure, every glass is a journey of discovery. Just like the Piedmontese people, the Barolos from Pira Barolos also need some time to open up and show their best side, but once it has been rolled through your glass for a while you will be doubly rewarded with a wine that stands out. like a house. It is not without reason that the great Gaja always drinks Pira wine when he visits Serralunga.

Tasting Notes

Rich and aromatic, with notes of ripe peach, citrus and wild herbs. Full-bodied and powerful on the palate, with fresh acidity, distinct minerality and a long, slightly saline finish.

Food Pairing

An excellent gastronomic wine with fish, shellfish, risotto, white meat, and aged cheeses. Also particularly beautiful with dishes featuring truffle. Serve at 10–12 °C.

About the Winery

The new generation of Barolo is called Cordero. Francesco, Lorenzo, and Caterina Cordero are the grandchildren of Luciana Vietti and Alfredo Currado, and the children of Mario Cordero, who guided the path of the legendary Vietti for decades. After the sale of the family cellar, the three chose a new beginning close to home: since the 2023 harvest, a renovated cellar in Serralunga d'Alba has been operating under the name Cordero Mario, named after their father.

The vineyards are located in two exceptional sites: the Valentino MGA in Castiglione Falletto, where a rare Nebbiolo clone grows on vines averaging over 60 years old, and Bricco San Pietro in Monforte d'Alba. They work with minimal intervention: hand-harvested, partially fermented with whole clusters, and aged in French tonneaux that preserve the wine's freshness without overshadowing the fruit.

Production is deliberately small, around 10,000 bottles, and the first Barolos immediately caught the attention of international critics for their understated, elegant style. These are exactly the wines to discover before the rest of the wine world finds them too.

Vineyard

The Colli Tortonesi, the historic home of the Timorasso. The limestone- and clay-rich hills of Tortona give the grape its characteristic minerality and structure.

Vinification & Ageing

The grapes are carefully pressed and fermented at a low temperature. The wine is then aged on its fine lees, which provides extra texture and complexity while maintaining its fresh acidity.

Ageing Potential

Timorasso is known for its ability to develop further in the bottle. This wine is already attractive now, but will gain more complexity, depth, and honeyed notes with a few years of aging. Can be kept for approximately 5–7 years after the harvest.
