Ginestra | Barolo MGA

Ginestra is the most important MGA on the eastern slopes of Monforte d'Alba and covers a large, fragmented area with significant differences in altitude. The largest part of the ridge, up to past the hamlet of Ginestra, consists of sandy Sant'Agata Fossili marl; at the most prominent point of the ridge, the Lequio formation predominates, and in some higher areas, Diano sandstone is also present.
Most Barolos from Ginestra are firmly structured and need time to refine. Towards the east, where the exposure gradually shifts, the wines become somewhat leaner and fruitier. Other parts of the MGA offer just a bit more elegance, while the southern zone near Grassi—with more weathered soils—produces softer, sweeter tannins.
