Sarmassa | Barolo MGA

Sarmassa can be viewed as a basin with Cascina Sarmassa at its lowest, deepest point. The soils, exposures, and altitudes vary significantly throughout: a south-facing flank on the Cerequio side typically produces the most substantial wines, while the plots at the foot of the Liste ridge have younger soils and the area below Rué features more weathered ground.
The common foundation is Sant'Agata Fossili marl, found in both sandy and stratified variants. Depending on the specific plot, wines from Sarmassa offer either more weight and flavorful tannins, or—in warmer exposures—more austerity, power, and a pronounced floral tone.
