Tasting Notes

Aromas of black cherry, blackberry, violets, leather, tobacco, and sweet spices. Rich and powerful on the palate, with ripe dark fruit, firm yet polished tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, mineral finish. An intense Barolo with great depth.

Food Pairing

Beautiful with beef tenderloin with red wine sauce, pappardelle with game ragù, truffle risotto, and roasted duck breast. Also delicious with stew, grilled mushrooms, and aged cheeses. Serve at 17°C.

About the Winery

In Monforte d’Alba, in the hamlet of San Giuseppe, lies the authentic and traditional winery Benevelli Piero, run by Massimo, son of the winery's namesake, Piero.

Massimo is a modest and hardworking winemaker who, together with his family, produces wine in a traditional manner. For the aging of the red cellar-worthy wines, only large wood casks are used. Only the Barolos spend the final year of their maturation in tonneaux. The three Barolos come from their own MGA vineyards in Monforte d’Alba: Ravera di Monforte, Le Coste di Monforte, and Mosconi.

In addition to these high-quality Barolos, Massimo makes four red wines, each deeply rooted in the traditions of the region: Langhe Freisa, Dolcetto d’Alba, Barbera d’Alba, and Langhe Nebbiolo. Very pure, unique, and without artifice.

It is not without reason that "Famiglia Contadina" – peasant family – is written on the label. That is how they feel, that is how they have been for over a hundred years, and that is how they wish to remain. You can find that same simplicity and authenticity in their wines. The house's vision is clear: the grape and the terroir must remain recognizable in the wine. No excess or tricks, just wine that tells you where it comes from.

Moreover, Massimo is not someone who attaches much value to PR or marketing. Until recently, there wasn't even a sign along the road to indicate that you had arrived at the winery.

These are exactly the wineries we love. Authentic, honest, and with respect for the land and traditions.

A winery after our own hearts!

Vineyard

Originating from Mosconi in Monforte d’Alba, a prestigious MGA with grey-white marl soils. Its location at approximately 400–420 meters contributes to freshness, while Mosconi is known for powerful and concentrated Nebbiolo with great structure.

Vinification & Ageing

Traditionally vinified in stainless steel tanks with approximately 30 days of maceration. The wine is then aged for about 20 months in large 500-liter tonneaux. The aging process supports the powerful structure without overpowering the character of Mosconi.

Ageing Potential

The 2020 combines ripe dark fruit and firm tannins with fresh acidity and a deep structure. Impressive now, but further bottle aging will bring more harmony and complexity. Will keep well until approximately 2040.
