The wine

A beautiful Barolo from the cru Ravera within the municipal boundaries of Barolo. Very drinkable, all these from 2018. Aromas of spices, ripe dark fruit such as cherry and blackcurrant and dry notes of undergrowth. Tannin nicely present. Harmonious mouthfeel with a persistent aftertaste.

CAGLIERO

Beautiful family business located just south of Barolo. If you are talking about authenticity, then you have come to the right place with the Cagliero family. Time has stood still there and they would like to keep that.
Father, mother and son Stefano run their cantina as it has been done for generations, full of passion and passion. They produce wonderfully unique wines of high quality. Stefano is the key player in wine making and his father helps him with it, while his mother runs the agriturismo located near the company.
In addition to a lot of other tasty wines, they make a Barolo Ravera, a Barolo Terlo and a Barolo Ravera Riserva. With the Riserva version we immediately have a prize winner. One of the finest Barolos we have tasted.
The story goes that the top secret recipe for their Barolo Chinato (a herbal drink with Barolo as its main ingredient) was found years later on an old beam in the attic, where it had been written down by Stefano's great-grandmother.

Cagliero produces almost 50,000 bottles per year and works with both barrique and tonneaux, but uses large wooden barrels for maturation for the Barolo line. The Dolcetto comes from the vineyard that used to belong to the nonna.

Remarkable; They use green pruning for their Barbera and their Langhe Bianco is an excellent blend of Arneis, Favorita and Sauvignon.

Tasting Notes

Aromas of red cherry, raspberry, rose petals, and fine spices, complemented by subtle mineral notes. Elegant and refined on the palate, with vibrant acidity, silky tannins, and a long, harmonious finish. A Barolo that beautifully combines finesse and depth.

Food Pairing

Delicious with roasted poultry, veal, and beef stews. Also pairs well with pasta with mushrooms, risotto with Parmesan, and other aged cheeses. Serve at 17 °C.

About the Winery

The Scarzello family has deep roots in Barolo. The winery, which has been in the family for generations, is currently run with great passion by Federico and his wife, Federica. Following the family recipe, they continue the traditional method of making Barolo. As such, Scarzello's wines are a reflection of Barolo itself. Since 1930, the Scarzello family has remained true to their winemaking style. The Barolos they produce undergo long maceration and aging in botte, resulting in wines for the long term.

The cantina is located in the heart of Barolo and has a small production of approximately 30,000 bottles per year; all work in the vineyard and cellar is carried out by the family itself.

Although Scarzello does not possess the same brand recognition as some of the other big names in Barolo, the wines they produce are highly regarded. Their Barolos are featured on the wine lists of renowned restaurants all over the world. The Sarmassa Vigan Merenda comes from the best part of the vineyard of the same name in Barolo. Scarzello stands for quality; in lesser years, the grapes from the Sarmassa vineyard are processed into the Comune di Barolo, ensuring that Sarmassa always maintains a consistently high quality. Regardless, they produce very interesting wines, including a highly accessible Nebbiolo and a complex Barbera, which comes from the Paiagallo cru in Barolo and, following wood aging in botte, is matured for its final months in amphorae.

We feel privileged to be able to offer these magnificent wines exclusively in the Netherlands.

Vineyard

Originating from Boschetti, a historic MGA southeast of the village of Barolo. The sandy soil gives the wine a striking elegance and refinement, with a softer structure than many other Barolo MGAs.

Vinification & Ageing

Traditionally vinified with long macerations and gentle extraction. The wine is then aged for a minimum of 18 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, followed by an extended period of bottle aging.

Ageing Potential

The 2020 combines refined red fruit with fresh acidity and elegant tannins. Already quite accessible, it will develop extra complexity with further bottle aging. Can be kept until approximately 2038.
