The wine
Thick and juicy Nebbiolo wine from the great Barbaresco Cru Gallina. Bright robin red color in the glass. Aromas of young leather, red berries and sal ammoniac.
Grainy but terribly tasty washing tannin in the mouth.
Favorite Nebbiolo from 2021!

UGO LEQUIO
Ugo Lequio is a story of its own. Despite not owning any vineyards, he started his own "garage" winery in 1981. Born and raised as the youngest son in a winemaking family in Neive, his childhood home stands directly across from the famous Barbaresco cru Gallina. Because of this, he knew exactly which vineyards produced the finest grapes and, in turn, the best wines. These plots were owned by the Marcarino family.
Since Ugo’s older brother, as the eldest son, inherited the family vineyards, Ugo had no choice but to purchase high-quality grapes in order to make his own wine. He started by buying Barbera grapes from the aforementioned vineyard. Only after years of building a relationship was he able to convince the Marcarino family to sell him a portion of their Nebbiolo grapes—grapes that had previously gone to legendary winemaker Bruno Giacosa.
Ugo handles everything himself, including overseeing vineyard management. His grape selection is meticulous, and his winemaking process remains highly traditional. He ages his wines longer than the prescribed regulations, using large wooden casks in his home-based "garage" winery. A perfectionist at heart, he produces stunning wines of exceptional quality. Ugo is a strong advocate of macerating his wines until all the sugar is fully converted into alcohol, a technique that results in deep, complex wines.
He is a true craftsman, creating incredible wines. Wine expert Kerin O’Keefe once wrote about Ugo and his Arneis:
"A fantastic expression of Arneis from one of the Langhe's top and shockingly still-under-the-radar producers."
