LUIGI PIRA
From the terrace of winemaker Gianpaolo Pira you have a beautiful view of 2 historic crus of Serralunga from which Pira makes his Barolo Marenca and Margheria. A little further on, the slope of the legendary cru Vignarionda is visible, another (in this case world famous) vineyard from which Pira produces a Barolo.
Founder, namesake and father Luigi Pira, who unfortunately passed away in 2021, had been growing grapes in and around Serralunga for decades. These were sold to the major wineries in and around Alba. In the early 1990s, son Gianpaolo changed strategy and quality became the spearhead. Since the 1990s, they have been making a classic and high-quality Piedmontese line of red wines under their own label. Gianpaolo, in addition to being a winemaker, an avid truffle hunter and figurehead of the company, rules the cellar, while his brothers Romolo and Claudio can generally be found on the land. Father Luigi Pira, also the namesake of the family business, unfortunately passed away in 2021.
Pira's Barolos guarantee quality and character. They are a reflection of the Serralunghese "roots" of the Piras.
Pira uses a fairly modern way of making wine and uses both small and large oak to mature its Barolos. At Pira they look very carefully at what the grape needs to generate the best possible Barolo wine. As mentioned earlier, these are wines full of character, depth and structure, every glass is a journey of discovery. Just like the Piedmontese people, the Barolos from Pira Barolos also need some time to open up and show their best side, but once it has been rolled through your glass for a while you will be doubly rewarded with a wine that stands out. like a house. It is not without reason that the great Gaja always drinks Pira wine when he visits Serralunga.
